Overview of Zirconia Restorations

Zirconia crowns combine natural esthetics with high strength through their metal-free, biocompatible structure. At our Istanbul dental laboratory, we produce restorations that closely mimic natural teeth with minimal margin of error, using a fully digital workflow that includes precise scanning, CAD/CAM production, sintering, and characterization. Key advantages include light transmission, tissue compatibility, high mechanical resistance, low thermal conductivity, and smooth surfaces. Depending on the case, we offer both monolithic zirconia (maximum strength) and layered zirconia (high-end esthetics), using only certified, high-translucency zirconia blocks.

Why Choose Zirconia?

Zirconium dioxide is a white-colored metal oxide that exhibits ceramic-like properties, making it both resistant to chewing forces and capable of providing a natural tooth-like translucency.

Key Advantages of Zirconia Crowns

  • Natural Esthetics and Light Transmission: Metal-free construction prevents gray lines at the gum margin and replicates natural enamel translucency.

  • Biocompatible (Tissue-Friendly): Excellent gingival compatibility, ideal for patients with metal allergies, and leaves no metallic taste in the mouth.

  • High Mechanical Strength: Resistant to fractures and cracks in high-pressure chewing areas, especially posterior teeth.

  • Low Thermal Conductivity: Minimizes sensitivity to hot and cold, enhancing patient comfort.

  • Smooth Surface: Resists plaque accumulation and staining from coffee, tea, or tobacco.

Production Techniques and Digital Protocols at Our Laboratory

We apply advanced digital dentistry protocols to achieve near-zero error margins in zirconia restorations:

  1. Precision Scanning: Digital or conventional impressions are captured with high-resolution scanners and transferred to digital format.

  2. CAD (Computer-Aided Design): Our expert technicians design restorations to match the patient’s facial and dental anatomy using professional software like Exocad.

  3. CAM (Computer-Aided Manufacturing): The design is milled from zirconia blocks with high-precision 5-axis milling machines, entirely automated.

  4. Sintering and Characterization: Zirconia restorations are sintered in high-temperature furnaces for enhanced durability, followed by personalized staining and glazing for a natural tooth-like appearance.

Case-Specific Zirconia Options

We provide two types of zirconia depending on the clinical requirements:

  1. Monolithic Zirconia: Fully milled, full-zirconia restorations with no additional porcelain layering. Ideal for bruxism cases and posterior teeth requiring maximum strength.

  2. Layered (Pressed) Zirconia: Zirconia substructure layered with esthetic porcelain, offering optimal depth and esthetic results, especially for anterior restorations.
