Maryland Bridge – Zirconium
Zirconia Maryland Bridges (Adhesive Bridges) Zirconia Maryland bridges are minimally invasive restorations primarily used for single-tooth gaps, applied without full reduction (preparation) of adjacent healthy teeth. In our laboratory, we combine the high strength of zirconia with the precision of digital design to produce durable and naturally aesthetic Maryland bridges.
What is a Zirconia Maryland Bridge?
Unlike traditional bridges, which require full preparation of neighboring support teeth, the Maryland bridge system uses thin “wings” bonded only to the back (lingual) surfaces of the support teeth. Making these wings from zirconia avoids the gray discoloration often seen with metal-supported systems and preserves the natural light translucency of the tooth.
Why Choose a Zirconia Maryland Bridge?
Maximum Tooth Preservation: Minimal preparation of support teeth preserves the natural tooth structure.
Superior Aesthetics: Fully ceramic zirconia structure eliminates metal reflection, ensuring a perfect match with adjacent teeth, especially in the anterior region.
Biocompatibility: Zirconia is fully compatible with oral tissues and gums, minimizing the risk of allergic reactions.
High Bond Strength: Advanced adhesive cementation techniques and specialized surface treatment in our lab maximize restoration retention.
Digital Production Process in Our Laboratory
The success of Maryland bridges relies on micron-level adaptation of the wings to the tooth. We achieve this precision using CAD/CAM technology:
Precise Digital Design: The wings are digitally designed to fit the lingual surfaces without interfering with occlusion.
Monolithic Zirconia Milling: Bridges are milled from high-strength zirconia blocks using 5-axis milling machines.
Surface Preparation: The inner surfaces of the wings are specially treated in the lab to maximize bonding strength.
Characterization: The pontic’s shape and color are artistically finished to blend seamlessly with adjacent teeth.
Indications for Use
Zirconia Maryland bridges are ideal in the following cases:
Single-tooth gaps in the anterior region (incisors).
Situations where implant treatment is not possible or the patient prefers to avoid surgery.
Long-term aesthetic solutions for young patients while waiting for complete tooth development.
Cases where adjacent teeth are healthy and unrestored.
