Maryland Bridge – PMMA
The Maryland Bridge – PMMA is a minimally invasive, temporary adhesive restoration method, primarily used for single-tooth gaps until permanent treatment is completed. Produced in our laboratory using high-quality PMMA (Polymethyl Methacrylate) blocks milled with CAD/CAM technology, these bridges provide patients with comfort and aesthetics throughout the treatment period.
What is a PMMA Maryland Bridge?
Unlike traditional bridge methods, this system does not require reduction of adjacent support teeth. The pontic restoring the missing tooth is fixed using thin wings bonded to the back surfaces of the neighboring teeth. PMMA’s lightweight properties and tooth-like color make it especially suitable for anterior cases, serving as the ideal “healing-phase temporary” solution.
Why Choose a PMMA Maryland Bridge?
Tissue-Friendly and Conservative: No preparation is required on the support teeth, fully preserving natural tooth structure.
Lightweight: The low density of PMMA ensures the bridge is comfortable in the mouth and adapts quickly to speaking and chewing.
Cost-Effective and Fast Production: More economical than permanent zirconia or ceramic systems, and can be fabricated quickly using a digital workflow.
Aesthetic Interim Solution: Maintains a natural appearance during implant healing or tissue shaping without affecting the patient’s social life.
Easily Modifiable: Clinicians can adjust shape or color intraorally with minimal effort.
PMMA Maryland Bridge Production Process in Our Laboratory
Even as a temporary restoration, our laboratory produces PMMA Maryland bridges with the precision of permanent prostheses:
Digital Design (CAD): Using the clinician’s scan data, thin-wing designs are created to perfectly fit the support teeth and maintain occlusion.
High-Precision Milling: The design is milled from multilayer PMMA blocks on 5-axis machines, creating natural color transitions in the temporary pontic.
Post-Polymerization and Polishing: The surface is smoothed to minimize roughness, resulting in a glossy, plaque-resistant, and highly aesthetic finish.
Indications for PMMA Maryland Bridges
Preserving aesthetics during the osseointegration period after implant placement.
Temporarily restoring missing teeth in younger patients until permanent restorations are appropriate.
Closing gaps after orthodontic treatment.
Functional and aesthetic trial restorations before extensive permanent work.
