Inlay, Onlay, and Overlay E-max Restorations are minimally invasive solutions that fall between traditional fillings and full crowns, aiming to preserve as much tooth structure as possible. At our Istanbul dental laboratory, these indirect restorations are produced using IPS e.max (Lithium Disilicate) material, offering both functional durability and flawless aesthetics.
What Is the Difference Between Inlay, Onlay, and Overlay?
The choice among these three types of restorations depends on the extent of tooth structure loss:
Inlay: A “lab-made filling” applied to the area between the cusps on the chewing surface of the tooth.
Onlay: Covers one or more cusps of the tooth, providing a larger restoration than an inlay.
Overlay: Covers the entire occlusal (chewing) surface while preserving surrounding tooth tissue without the extensive reduction of a full crown.
Why Choose IPS e.max Material?
At our Istanbul dental laboratory, we use IPS e.max lithium disilicate glass ceramic for these restorations due to its advantages:
Chameleon Effect: e.max reflects light like natural tooth structure, achieving perfect color integration with adjacent teeth.
Chemical Bonding: The material can bond chemically to the tooth using adhesive systems, minimizing the risk of leakage between the restoration and tooth.
High Strength: Even in thin layers, it is strong enough to withstand high chewing forces.
Biocompatibility: Friendly to gum tissues and does not cause allergic reactions.
Production Process at Our Istanbul Dental Laboratory
We combine digital workflows with traditional craftsmanship for a precise fit:
Digital Design (CAD): Impressions from the dentist are transferred to the digital environment. The occlusal anatomy is designed to achieve perfect contact with opposing teeth.
Precise Milling or Pressing: The design is milled from e.max blocks using our CAD/CAM units or pressed using Zir-Press technology.
Characterization: Natural tooth details such as fissures and color variations are applied to the restoration by our expert technicians using specialized staining techniques.
Advantages of e.max Inlay and Onlay Restorations
Compared to traditional composite fillings and full crowns, they offer several benefits:
Maximum Tooth Preservation: Only the damaged area is restored, leaving healthy tooth structure intact.
Wear Resistance: Does not wear down over time like composite fillings and retains its shape.
Prevents Marginal Leakage: Lab-fabricated restorations do not undergo polymerization shrinkage, reducing the risk of secondary caries.
Smooth Surface: Minimizes plaque accumulation and resists discoloration.
