Bar-Retained Overdentures – Implant-Supported Bar Solutions

Bar-supported prostheses are removable dentures for fully edentulous patients, anchored on implants to ensure maximum retention and stability. At our lab, we craft these restorations using precision casting and advanced digital CAD/CAM technology, providing patients with a chewing experience nearly as comfortable as fixed prosthetics.

Bar-retained overdentures are removable prosthetic systems designed for fully edentulous mouths, supported by dental implants. They provide exceptional retention and stability while allowing patients to remove them for cleaning. At our dental laboratory, we combine precision casting with digital CAD/CAM technologies to produce bar-retained restorations that deliver a chewing experience close to that of fixed prostheses.

What is a Bar-Retained Overdenture?

This system involves 2 to 4 (or more) implants placed in the jawbone, onto which a custom metal bar is screwed. The denture then attaches to this bar via precision clips, preventing movement in the mouth and providing maximum retention.

Key Advantages of Bar-Retained Overdentures

  • Superior Stability: Unlike conventional dentures, bar-retained systems stay securely in place, giving confidence while speaking and chewing.

  • Lip Support & Esthetics: In cases with significant bone loss, the denture base restores facial contours and lip support, improving esthetics.

  • Balanced Force Distribution: Custom-designed bars distribute chewing forces evenly across implants, protecting their longevity.

  • Easy Hygiene: Since the denture is removable, cleaning around the bar and implants is simple, reducing the risk of peri-implantitis.

  • Palatal Comfort: The palate can remain uncovered in the upper jaw, enhancing taste perception and overall comfort.

Our Laboratory Production Process

We create bar-retained overdentures with micron-level precision:

  1. Digital Design (CAD): Implant positions are scanned, and the optimal bar design (Dolder, Hader, or Milled Bar) is digitally planned.

  2. Precision Manufacturing (CAM): Bars are milled from titanium or cobalt-chrome blocks on our 5-axis machines, completely touch-free.

  3. Passive Fit Verification: Bars are carefully measured to ensure a stress-free fit on the implants.

  4. Clip and Retainer Assembly: Precision clips are adjusted for optimal retention within the denture.

Ideal Indications for Bar-Retained Overdentures
Bar-retained overdentures are particularly suitable for:

  • Cases with severe bone resorption where fixed prostheses are not feasible.

  • Elderly patients requiring facial and lip support.

  • Situations with wide implant spacing where force distribution across implants is needed.

Bar Options We Offer

Depending on the case, we provide Dolder Bars, Hader Bars, or our custom-milled Milled Bars. Milled bars can incorporate sliding or locking mechanisms to further enhance prosthesis stability.
